I attended the 2011 RWA Conference in NYC. A great event that inspires writers to get fingers to keys. But the high/lowlight of the trip may have been the train ride home. Innocently, my conference buddy and I were sitting on the train when we were joined by a man. No biggie, until he decided to educate us on the dangers of overseas travel -- from athlete's foot that was three times worse as anything you can get in the U.S. to sneaky ways those in foreign countries try to kidnap Americans. At times, we (who can both talk the ear off a bunny -- that's a big ear to talk off) were stunned into silence by his graphic descriptions.
On a positive note, we assured him that we will now have all kinds of inspiration for new characters and books. I may never look at train travel the same way again.
